Those deals include the almost $5-billlion energy deal between French Total SA and Iran.

And so the president pulled an old trick out of the bag, one that he had so gladly used in his previous life as a businessman and reality TV star.

However, he is unlikely for now to remove the U.S. from the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action, which he has called "the worst deal ever".

Haley has been a long-time harsh critic of the agreement, and was one of the few voices in the Trump administration to encourage the president to declare Iran in violation. "We encourage the US Administration and Congress to consider the implications to the security of the US and its allies before taking any steps that might undermine the JCPoA, such as re-imposing sanctions on Iran lifted under the agreement".

In other words, Congress could craft the policy the administration won't, with flexible benchmarks for progress. And also how many of his supporters view him, and precisely why they voted for him.

Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif in Vienna in 2014, prior to a round of talks that led to the nuclear accord the following year. Consistent with this, Trump announced his intention to place extra sanctions on Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps.

In response, Iranian President Hassan Rouhani said Trump's accusations were "abusive and downright wrong". He also accused Iran of helping North Korea with its weapons programs.

Trump will also ask Congress "to amend or replace outright the legislation that currently requires him to certify Iranian compliance every 90 days", The Associated Press reports.

"Trump says Iran's government attacked the U.S.in a way as if it was Iran that destroyed a U.S. plane with 290 passengers", a Twitter user said in a reference to the downing of an Iran Air flight that was shot down by the U.S. Navy in July 1988, killing all passengers on board.

Iran and other parties to the agreement have said that they are not open to revising the accord. "He sanctioned the IRGC, the murderers of hundreds of young Iranians, the number one enemy of freedom in Iran", the reader added. Trump is speaking loudly and carrying a tiny stick.

Trump said in a Washington speech that he would not certify that Iran is complying with its agreement with six world powers and the European Union, despite a determination by the UN's nuclear watchdog that Tehran is meeting the deal's terms.

"What is the purpose of a deal that, at best, only delays Iran's nuclear capability for a short period of time?"

And what's more the deal was done, not just with Iran, but with China, Russia, Britain, France and Germany. The agreement "parked" the nuclear problem, rather than resolving it. Important provisions of the accord will expire in either eight or 13 years. But the timing is odd. But where it leads is the issue worrying many people. But experts think it's nothing good.

English edition of Asharq Al-Awsat - the world's premier pan-Arab daily. And so for the nation, this is a signal moment. Tillerson, perhaps, belongs in a third category - like Trump, an outsider, as one new to government after a career in business, but also with an "establishment" seal of approval.

If a solution cannot be reached with Congress and U.S. allies "then the agreement will be terminated", Trump said. Tillerson came to Trump recommended by former Defense Secretary Robert Gates, former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, and former national security adviser Stephen Hadley.
