Police also confirmed they had been called to the Wythenshawe home before, saying: "We have had one previous domestic incident reported on August 25 and that investigation was still ongoing".

"The woman is being treated for serious injuries in hospital and a 31-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of murder and remains in police custody for questioning".

The 23-month-old boy was discovered by police after they were called to reports of a domestic incident at a semi-detached home in Beaford Road, Wythenshawe, on Sunday morning.

A man and woman left the house to go to hospital before police arrived.

It has now emerged that police visited the same address on Friday after a similar incident.

A 31-year-old man had earlier been arrested on suspicion of murder and is now being quizzed by cops.

Detective Inspector Carl Jones of the Major Incident Team said: 'This is a truly distressing investigation and we are doing everything we can to find out exactly what has happened.

The police force has referred itself to the Independent Police Complaints Commission as it had previously been called to the property.

Formal identification has taken place and the boy's family are being supported by specially-trained officers. It was then that they found the body of a young boy, Greater Manchester Police said.

"There will be a scene at the property for a number of days while officers investigate the case and you will see more police within the area to provide reassurance to the local community".

A cordon is in place around the modern house, which appeared to be a rental property.

Neighbours said they were woken by the sounds of sirens from police cars and ambulance.
