Texas governor says flooding in Houston may be worst ever

Some 2,500 people were taking refuge in Houston's George R. Brown Convention Center Monday morning, the Houston Chronicle reported, citing the Red Cross.

The slow-moving storm has caused catastrophic flooding in Texas.

"The Texas National Guard is working closely with FEMA and federal troops to respond urgently to the growing needs of Texans who have fallen victim to Hurricane Harvey, and the activation of the entire Guard will assist in the efforts already underway", he said.

With Texans still in danger from high flood levels, Maj. In the past 48 hours, numerous spots in the region have measured more than 25 inches of rainfall.

Much of Southeast Texas is under a Flash Flood Watch Through Wednesday night, but the NWS warned that the watch could be extended beyond Thursday evening.

Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner said he established a Hurricane Harvey Relief Fund after "after receiving an overwhelming number of inquiries from citizens and corporations who would like to help".

On Sunday, Abbott said guard members were being positioned all along the Texas Gulf Coast.

President Trump granted Governor Abbott's request for a disaster proclamation on Friday, activating response from the Federal Emergency Management Agency for relief to the state. "Our second goal is making sure our fellow Texans have access to food, water, supplies".

In addition, four hundred people have been deployed by the U.S. Department of Transportation in response to the danger, officials said, and 250 highway closures were established statewide.
