Man City aim for club record Alexis Sanchez deal

Manchester City want to sign Arsenal forward Alexis Sanchez before Thursday's transfer deadline.

However, any deal could leave Raheem Sterling's future at City in doubt.

Sterling, who joined City in 2015 from Liverpool for a British record transfer fee of £49m, has been offered to Arsenal in part-exchange after being informed he can leave.

City are not trying to sell Sterling, who has scored in their last two league games, though they are conscious that the 22-year-old England worldwide may prefer a move if competition for places in attack increases should they succeed in their bid for Sanchez.

Shkodran Mustafi's representatives are in Italy as talks over a season-long loan move to Inter have reached an advanced stage while Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain is keen to complete a move to Chelsea.

The England winger has arguably been City's most impactful player this season with late goals in the games against Everton and Bournemouth earning them four points.

Arsenal may only be tempted by around £70m but City have not offered that in straight cash. The Chilean's body language in Arsenal's 4-0 defeat by Liverpool on Sunday smacked...

City's deal would at least allow the Gunners to earn some money from Sanchez's departure while also bringing in a player with plenty of Premier League experience to help replace the Chilean. But the fierce competition for places means he is not always guaranteed a starting berth whereas he would likely be first choice at Arsenal; a key factor in a season directly before the World Cup finals in Russian Federation next summer.
