To commemorate his birth anniversary, in 2012, the Government of India made a decision to celebrate 29th August as the country's "National Sports Day".

On Tuesday, the Prime Minister keeping his words paid a tribute to the hockey legend Major Dhyan Chand on his birthday and launched the National Sports Talent Search Portal. The legendary player led the country to win three consecutive hockey Olympic Golds (1928, 1932, 1936) with the help of his marvelous goal-scoring skills.

It was after the very first match of the 1936 Olympics where Dhyan Chand's magical stick work led to posters appearing all over Berlin to come see the Indian magician Dhyan Chand in action at the Olympic complex. Despite such folklore attached to the man in his own lifetime, it's a mystery why the story of Dhyan Chand still finds it hard to attract filmmakers.

- Virender Sehwag (@virendersehwag) August 29, 2017Sir Don Bradman on seeing Dhyan Chand said, "You score goals like runs".

Let's cherish and know more about our national hockey hero and his achievements. Thus, he is the greatest sportsperson that India had ever produced.

Meanwhile, veteran goalkeeper P.R. Sreejesh, Paralymian Deepa Malik and former Indian cricketer Mohammad Kaif were among the others, who remembered the hockey wizard on the occasion of National Sports Day. To harness this potential, a portal was launched by the Sports ministry. His contribution to hockey was unparalleled.

PM Modi said, "The country celebrates National Sports Day on the 29th of August". The National Sports Day is celebrated throughout the country in various educational institutes, Schools and sports Academics. Sports means physical fitness, mental alertness and personality enhancement.

Goel said his ministry is taking various initiatives to promote sports in India and get more and more people associated with games.
