Congressman Lou Barletta announces US Senate run against Bob Casey

U.S. Rep. Lou Barletta has announced his candidacy for U.S. he looks to turn Sen. Bob Casey's seat in Pennsylvania. Barletta was urged to run by President Donald Trump.

"After talking to Mary Grace and our family, many people across Pennsylvania and saying a few prayers, I've chose to run for the United States Senate", he said in a video he posted to Twitter.

The Republican Party now controls the Senate with 52 seats and has opportunities to add more with a favorable map in 2018. Casey, who has been a senator since 2007 because "Pennsylvania deserves better than an obstructionist senator", Barletta said.

Barletta's entry into the race was widely expected after The Associated Press reported last month that he had relayed his plans to GOP officials and activists.

"Barletta, a former Mayor of Hazleton describes himself as a successful small business owner who listens to ".the people of Pennsylvania and fights for them in Washington".

Barletta told GOP leaders he would be entering the race at the end of July, but had not made a public announcement.

Barletta is in his fourth term representing a House district that stretches from south-central Pennsylvania's rolling farms through northeastern Pennsylvania's anthracite coal fields.

He won his House seat during the Republican midterm wave of 2010 after drawing national attention when as mayor of Hazleton he pushed an ordinance meant to punish businesses that hire undocumented immigrants and landlords who rent to the immigrants.
