Ward has agreed a deal running until June, 2019 with the option of a possible further 12 months.

Ward had ended pre-season stating he was "looking forward to the challenge" offered by the signing of former Leeds United full-back Charlie Taylor who is expected to challenge the Republic of Ireland global for a starting berth.

Stephen Ward was a surprise goalscorer in Burnley's opening day victory over champions Chelsea, rifling a half-volley past Thibaut Courtois to open his account for the season.

"I'm delighted to have signed", he told the club's website.

Ward scored Burnley's second in their 3-2 win over Chelsea at the weekend as Sean Dyche's side made the ideal start to their 2017-18 Premier League campaign.

Sean Dyche's side certainly couldn't have made a better start with Ward playing a key role, his wonderful strike sandwiched between two from Sam Vokes as the Clarets led the champions 3-0 at half-time.

"Thankfully it sat up nicely and ended up in the back of the net".

"We put in a great performance and we have to be very proud of what we did".

Ward only made nine top-flight appearances in his first season at the club due to injury.

In quotes published in the Lancashire Telegraph, Dyche said after the win: 'There's no guarantees but he looks like he's fitter, he's adapted better, he understands the tempo of the game better and that it's physically demanding, particularly here; they've got some very powerful players, they're a big, athletic side.

Ward, who has played in two European Championships for his country, appeared in 37 of Burnley's 38 Premier League matches during the 2016-17 season.
