Ankara issued a diplomatic note to the German authorities about news reports that Adil Oksuz, one of the chief plotters of the failed coup attempt, is hiding in Germany, the official told Xinhua on condition of anonymity.

Turkey has sent a note of protest to Germany, Turkish media report August 16.

Oksuz, a theology academic, is accused of being a follower of US-based cleric Fethullah Gulen, who Ankara says was behind last year's failed coup attempt.

Mr Cavusoglu said: "If this person is there, we asked that he be located, taken into custody and returned to Turkey".

Turkey sent a diplomatic note requesting the extradition of Adil Oksuz, who the government says was the "imam" of air force personnel who past year bombed parliament as part of the attempt to topple the government.

Turkey accuses Germany of providing a safe haven to Kurdish militants and suspects wanted for alleged links to the coup.
