Marine wildlife protection group Equinac recently shared the story of a group of tourists who pulled a baby dolphin out of the sea to pass it around for selfies - which ended up in the animal's death.

When people on the beach saw the dolphin, they reportedly took it out of the water and passed it around on the beach in Mojacar.

The dolphin was dead by the time marine rescue officials could reach the scene.

"Humans are the most irrational animal there is", the group said in roughly translated post.

It said that cetaceans are very susceptible to stress, and that the "crowding to take pictures and touch them, causes them a very strong shock that greatly accelerates a cardio-respiratory failure, which is what finally happened". "There are many [who are] incapable of empathy for a living being that is alone, scared, starved, without his mother and terrified...." They may have been able to get the animal into a zoo or animal rescue clinic and saved its life.

One picture appeared to show a child inadvertently covering the young animal's blowhole as they stroked it.

It said that harassing dolphins, which is a protected species, is prohibited by law in Spain and advised members of the public to call Spain's animal emergency services for such situations in future.

'In their selfishness, all they want is to photograph it and touch it, even if the animal is suffering from stress'.

The beachgoers weren't responsible for the dolphin being stranded in the first place, Equinac clarified.

The group added: "The animal was submitted to the curiosity of those who wanted to photograph and touch it".

Social media users flooded the post with comments, with many criticizing the actions of those eager to get the ideal 'summer photo'.

The group posted a lengthy comment about the dolphin's death, saying that animals need "respect and consideration".

We've all gone to extreme lengths at times to take the ideal selfie, but this is a new low.

Last April sunbathers in Argentina were branded "selfie-taking scum" after being blamed for taking a dolphin out of the water and posing for selfies.

"Check for dangers to yourself and the animal".

A tourist who filmed the scenes later said it was already dead before it was paraded along the beach, south of Buenos Aires.
