Roland Koeman memorably dropped Barkley for Everton's final Premier League match last season at Arsenal.

The injury blow means it is likely he will stay put at Everton after all and, with Gylfi Sigurdsson set to arrive at the club later this week, Hutchison says Barkley's transfer gamble has badly backfired. With four games in the next 11 days, Koeman's resources are set to be stretched.

Koeman has previously suggested that he will attempt to cash in on the midfielder, with Tottenham Hotspur and Chelsea both said to have shown an interest, but no official bids have yet been made. [James] McCarthy's out with a knock on his knee, Sandro Ramirez is doubtful.

"He stopped training last Monday, it looks like the hamstring", Koeman said.

Everton's hopes of selling Ross Barkley to Tottenham may be over.

Premier League champions Chelsea are also believed to be interested in Barkley but their pursuit of Leicester City's Danny Drinkwater suggests they are now looking at other targets.

"In trying to move away from Everton I think Ross Barkley and his agent have played the worst poker hand in the world". "No, there's no update about his situation".

Koeman also confirmed that he would wait until the end of the month before reviewing Barkley's role with the club this upcoming season.

The England worldwide has rejected the offer of a new contract at Goodison Park and is now into the final 12 months of his existing deal. The former Tottenham midfielder underwent a successful medical on Wednesday morning and will join Koeman's men in a deal that could be worth £45m.
