Speaking on where he likes to play, the former Dortmund man said, "I prefer to play as a No.10 but if the manager thinks I'm helpful for the team playing on the wings I am happy to play on the wings".

The Hammers appeared to have a timid approach to the game and paid the price as United comprehensively outplayed them and completed a thrashing through a brace from new signing Romelu Lukaku and further goals from Anthony Martial and Paul Pogba.

"Lukaku scored his goals and Lindelof is still going to have time to show himself". "But at the same time I am very happy that we have got him".

"As a player and for a club, you are always going to have ups and downs".

"The fact that we start (by) winning and are top of the league means nothing, because last season we started winning and I think we were top of the league after the first match - it means nothing".

Speaking about Lukaku, Matic believes he'll be very important this season. "It is always hard but we will try and do our best".

Basking alongside Mourinho in the glory of United's opening Premier League victory is assistant Ricardo Formosinho.

"The performance again, the levels of confidence, is what matters for me".

"They made us pay for every mistake", he said.

"But it was a solid performance".

Expectations were high going into the new campaign, but it looked like the same indifferent West Ham which toiled to an 11th place finish last season often flirting with the relegation battle along the way.

"He played because Jones and Bailly were both suspended". The difference between Lukaku and Matic is that they have years and years of experience of Premier League.

And while none particularly impressed, they were no different to any of their under performing teammates, with the exception of bright young thing Declan Rice.

"I brought Ricardo Carvalho to Chelsea in 2004 and he was a phenomenal defender, one of the best central defenders in the Premier League, but he struggled".

"Victor needs a little time and he is going to have that".
