In the aftermath of the violent Charlottesville protests, Hollywood Forever Cemetery has made a decision to remove a 6-foot-tall Confederate monument early Wednesday morning.

A monument honoring Confederate soldiers at the Hollywood Forever cemetery will be removed by Wednesday evening, a cemetery official said Tuesday.

Cassity told the Times that the decision was made after consulting the monument's owner, the Long Beach chapter of the United Daughters of the Confederacy.

"It will take quite a few hours to remove it", the cemetery's Eddy Martinez told Fox11.

A petition started Tuesday on change.org calling for the monument's removal received 1,564 signatures as of 11 p.m. "Some people said if you don't take it down, we will".

The monument has been subject to vandalism recently, with the word "no" written across it in black marker, according to Cassity.

The United Daughters of the Confederacy purchased the grave plots, placed the monument in the center and deeded the plots to individual veterans, Fox11 reported.

Hollywood Forever Cemetery plans to put the monument into storage on Wednesday. "We don't want to be a place of contention or debate", said Cassidy.
