According to eyewitnesses accounts, around 12 PM labourers were engaged in covering the heap of coal at the port's coal stockyard siting a rain forecast when the heap caved in. Tension prevailed in the area after the incident.

The agitated labourers have torched three offices, an oil tanker and several other vehicles parked in DPCL campus. Till the report was filed the security forces had yet not taken control of the situation as they were outnumbered by the labourers.

Following the deaths, irate people heckled Chief Executive Officer when he went to see the injured at the hospital situated in the port premises. "We are investigating the case to find out the exact reason of the death of the labourers", he added.

The decision was taken in a meeting in presence of Bhadrak collector, Superintendent of Police (SP), officials of Labour Department and two officials of the company.

The labourers will raise their demand for compensation to the families of the deceased. Three others were also critically injured in the tragic incident. "The accident happened while the labourers were stacking coal in the yard". The safety of our thousands of employees and contractual labourers is Adani's top-most priority and we have a well-planned safety training programme for our employees and those of contractors as well. "We are fully cooperating with the authorities too".
