A former Miss America and Harvard Law School graduate said on Tuesday she would seek the Republican nomination in Illinois' attorney general race next year.

Urbana attorney Erika Harold is running for Illinois Attorney General. Long active in Republican politics, she lost to Rodney Davis during the primary in her 2014 run for Congress.

"Career politicians have made it a nightmare for too many families in our state", Harold said in a statement to announce her candidacy. "Today, I am announcing my candidacy for Attorney General because the people of IL deserve a state government that works for them, not the powerful".

She was the 2003 Miss America. Since then, she has returned to Illinois to work at Meyer Capel in Champaign County and serves on the Illinois Supreme Court's Committee on Equality and Commission on Professionalism.
