The Miami Herald is now reporting that an agreement has been struck with Jeffrey Loria to sell the club to a group headed by Jeter and business partner Bruce Sherman.

The Sherman-Jeter group, which also includes former National Basketball Association great Michael Jordan, beat out a contingent led by Miami businessman Jorge Mas. The deal will still have to approved by three-quarters of baseball's owners. In addition to Jeter, the ownership group has an athletic dimension thanks to a stake from Michael Jordan, who invested an unknown amount of money with the group.

In a 2014 interview with Jack Curry of the Yes Network, Jeter called owning a team "the next ultimate goal", and that he wanted to be the guy "that calls the shots".

Sherman would have controlling interest but he would reportedly leave the baseball management to Jeter.

The Jeter/Sherman group beat out a number of other offers, including one led by a Miami businessman and another led by an investment banker, Tagg Romney and Jeb! One detail Heyman added was that the Jeter group will likely remove the home run sculpture in left-center field. The group finalized a $1.2 billion purchase agreement with Loria on Friday and submitted it to the Major League Baseball office.
