One of the documents leaked Monday appeared to include a confidential cast list for "Game of Thrones", HBO's wildly popular adaptation of George R.R. Martin's fantasy series "A Song of Ice and Fire".

The letter, which is addressed to HBO CEO Richard Plepler, is largely incoherent but threatens to release more data unless the company pays "our 6 month salary to bitcoin".

Hackers who have leaked Game of Thrones scripts and other data from entertainment company HBO have released a note demanding a ransom payment.

HBO bosses have called in the FBI to investigate the security breach, while also working with police and cybersecurity experts in an attempt to prevent the release of any more information or unaired episodes.

The hackers gave the network three days to make a decision. All documents that have been leaked bear a watermark with the message "HBO is Falling".

HBO officials acknowledged last week that the company had been targeted by hackers who managed to get "proprietary information".

"While it has been reported that a number of emails have been made public, the review to date has not given us a reason to believe that our email system as a whole has been compromised", the statement from the Time Warner unit said. "We want to be your partner in a tiny part of HBO's huge income", the hackers were quoted as saying.

The email continued, "Some of HBO's top competitors are negotiating with us for buying the dump. We are serious enough to do our business", the note read.

The broadcaster has said it continues to investigate the incident.

So far the HBO leaks have been limited, falling well short of the chaos inflicted on Sony in 2014.

The data dump, comprised of just 3.4 gigabytes of the 1.5 terabytes allegedly stolen by the group, appeared online Monday and included a video ransom note, according to The Associated Press. In that attack, hackers unearthed thousands of embarrassing emails and released personal information, including salaries and social security numbers, of almost 50,000 current and former Sony employees.
