'Star Wars: Secrets of the Empire' Experience Coming to Disney Parks

Disney is already building lavish new "Star Wars" rides at its theme parks.

The Void, which joined the 2017 Disney Accelerator earlier this year, was founded in Utah to combine a slew of technologies together, including body tracking, haptic-feedback and virtual reality, to deliver fully immersive stories in which players are actively engaged.

A new immesive experience, Star Wars: Secrets of the Empire, is set to open to the public at two new Void Experience Centers at Downtown Disney at Disneyland Resort and Disney Springs at Walt Disney World Resort, beginning this holiday season.

The companies gave few additional details, omitting how much tickets would cost or exactly what participants would encounter.

"Through the power of the VOID, guests who step into Star Wars: Secrets of the Empire won't just see this world, they'll know that they are part of this fantastic story", said Curtis Hickman, co-founder and chief creative officer at the VOID.

The Void is perhaps best known for its Ghost Busters VR attraction at the Times Square Madame Tussauds. Each person (four people can participate at once) carries a plastic gun that becomes a functioning proton pack, just like in the "Ghostbusters" films, through the magic of virtual reality.

The experience was produced by ILMxLab, Lucasfilm's immersive entertainment division, in cooperation with The Void.

The Void is a leader in an area of entertainment that big media companies like Disney see as growth opportunity.

Getting an experience on Disney property has to be the holy grail for a location-based VR startup, The Void has been aiming to commoditize VR experiences in a way that doesn't rely on the renaissance of arcades or convincing movie theaters to convert free space.
