James Brower, 36, killed Jacelyn O'Connor by smothering her as he was raping her, according to Chenango County District Attorney Joseph McBride.

A man suspected of killing an 11-year-old relative in NY allegedly smothered her to death as he was raping her, according to prosecutors and court documents. "O'Connor, in the course and commission of rape in the first degree", according to the felony complaint, which was obtained by Central New York television station WSTM. Brower and Jacelyn have been connected with the church, he said.

The girl was smothered to death, reported Spectrum News in the Southern Tier.

Troopers were called to a home in the town of Norwich on Sunday night after reports of an 11-year-old in cardiac arrest. When troopers arrived, she was dead.

Brower, wearing orange jail clothes and with his hands and legs shackled, appeared this morning for a continuation of an arraignment started in Norwich Town Court after his arrest Tuesday.

Jacelyn was a student in the Morris Central School District, where officials are mourning her loss. The family's pastor says they are just not ready to talk at this time. "It is a tragedy that is hard to comprehend for us all".

The community has also planned a candlelight vigil in Jacelyn's memory on Monday at 7 p.m.
