Singer and actress Suchitra Krishnamoorthi has complained to the Mumbai Police after being bombarded with abusive tweets about a post on the azaan or Muslim call to prayer. Suchitra Krishnamoorthi tweeted to and received a prompt response from the Mumbai Police's handle, after which she filed a complaint at her local station in Mumbai, posting a picture of herself in front of it. "Thank you Mumbai Police, you are the best", she wrote. After the Mumbai police's twitter handle was tagged, the police promptly replied saying that the tweet was forwarded to the cyber police station.

The police has registered the case under IPC sections 509 (word, gesture or act meant to insult the modesty of a woman) and 67 (a) (punishment for publishing or transmitting of material containing sexually explicit act).

Ms Krishnamoorthi, while sharing the abusive messages in a tweet, said, "Look at these perverts!"

She called it a case of "imposed religiosity", describing the use of loudspeakers as "lowlife" and "dumb".

The actress took to Twitter to share a photo compilation of the perverse comments she has been since receiving.

The actress/singer had tweeted "Came home at 4.45 am 2 most aggressive/ear shattering call of azaan". "Feel sorry for my India -with this kind of attitude towards women it's no wonder we've become rape capital of the world".

Calling Krishnamoorthi's tweet a way to get "cheap publicity", MIM legislator, advocate Waris Pathan, said she should not have spoken against azaan, which lasts less than a minute. "Azaan has been practiced for the last 1400 years and it is not proper on the part of people like Sonu Nigam and Suchitra Krishnamoorthi to object to it", said Pathan.

The persons who trolled had allegedly used demeaning language to criticise her tweet.
