Mr Trump has been pressuring Senate Republicans to vote and took to Twitter to say Obamacare was "torturing" Americans and he had a "pen in hand" to sign a bill. John McCain, R-Ariz.is is applauded as he arrives of the floor of the Senate on Capitol Hill in Washington, Tuesday, July 25, 2017. "They haven't been overburdened by greatness lately", he said, offering a lesson of civics and civility as his fellow senators unusually packed the chamber and watched from their desks with rapt attention.

Since the diagnosis, McCain has been showered with tributes from all sides as an American original whose lifetime of public service included years as a prisoner of war in Vietnam and the 2008 Republican presidential nominee. His vote holds crucial significance as just days earlier the 80-year-old had been diagnosed with brain cancer.

Before the vote, McConnell declared, "We can't let this moment slip by", essentially lecturing GOP lawmakers to give their party's high-profile legislation a chance to move forward.

Standing in the well of the Senate with the surgical scar over his left eyebrow clearly visible, McCain urged his colleagues to "stop listening to the bombastic loudmouths" on radio, television and the internet who rail against compromise. Merely preventing your political opponents from doing what they want isn't the most inspiring work. "We are his equals". Addressing concerns that tens of millions will lose coverage if the Republican bill becomes law, McCain said the process is far from over.

McCain's sermon was lent added poignancy and urgency by his illness.

No Democrats supported the motion, leaving Republicans to corral the necessary 50 votes. Average survival for the condition tends to be around 14 months with treatment, that includes chemotherapy and radiation.

John McCain's office announced he is going to return to the U.S. Senate on Tuesday.

McConnell's bill would abolish much of Obama's law, eliminating its tax penalties on people not buying policies, cutting Medicaid, eliminating its tax boosts on medical companies and providing less generous health care subsidies for consumers.

Trump on Wednesday criticized Murkowski, who on Tuesday was one of two Republicans who voted against beginning debate to repeal the ACA.

A Navy officer, McCain spent nearly six years as a prisoner of war in North Vietnam and was tortured repeatedly. "So great that John McCain is coming back to vote", Trump tweeted.

"The success of the Senate is important to the continued success of America", he lectured.

McCain's return was reminiscent of a similar scenario involving McCain's good friend, the late Democratic Sen.

"'We don't hide behind walls, we bridge them, we are a blessing to humanity".
