No Surprise Here: McLaren's Next Hypercar Will be Mental

McLaren now is developing what will be the third model in its Ultimate Series, alongside the P1 and track-only P1 GTR, and is expected to unveil it late 2017, Autocar reports, citing anonymous sources.

It's believed the hypercar will use "a modified version of the 3.8-litre twin-turbo V8 that is at the heart of every McLaren road vehicle on sale today", adds Autocar, paired to a "tweaked version" of the seven-speed automatic gearbox in the 720S. It's expected this will help the P15 annihilate a P1 around the track, as well as at least match, if not better, its 0-60mph time of 2.7 seconds. Power will come from a reworked version of McLaren's twin-turbocharged V-8 making close to 800 horsepower. If the report is accurate, it will be at least 247 kg lighter than the P1 and that should translate into some mind-blowing performances.

The P15 will weight in at less than 1,300kg thanks to a one-piece carbon fibre tub used on the brand's 720S.

The car's styling is said to be a function-over-form affair, with bodywork styling present only for the sake of performance benefits rather than aesthetic pleasure. The report claims it will utilise McLaren's Formula One knowledge using active aerodynamics as well as a large rear diffuser and rear wing to produce signifcant downforce and give the auto a dramatic appearance.

As for the interior, it will only have what's needed for the P15 to receive road approval as everything else has been taken out to reach that remarkable, yet unconfirmed low weight. Production is expected to be capped at 500 units, each with a price tag in excess of $1.4 million. And it's about to get even more confusing, as McLaren reportedly has been secretly developing a no-holds-barred "track weapon" that will debut later this year.

As a reminder, 2019 will be the year when we'll see the hotly anticipated F1 spiritual successor, a sold-out $2.5-million three seater that now goes by the name of "BP23".

Yet it looks like the production version of the P15 actually will arrive first.
