Jon Stewart will return to stand-up comedy in a special for HBO, the pay-cable network announced Wednesday.

There is no title or date yet for Stewart's stand-up special.

"I'm really thrilled to be able to return to stand-up on HBO", Stewart said. The special will feature stand-up performances, sketches and short films.

We're ready Jon. And looking forward to everything you have to bring. Since his departure, he's had a handful of guest appearances on The Late Show With Stephen Colbert.

He has signed on to host the upcoming Night of Too Many Stars charity benefit for autism awareness and services. His satirical take on the news and politics of the day won him a legion of fans. His last special, which also aired on HBO, was 1996's Jon Stewart: Unleavened.

Stewart has been mostly out of the televised or public eye since leaving The Daily Show in 2015 after 16 years and handing it over to new host Trevor Noah. "We've all missed his uniquely thoughtful brand of humor". The star-studded evening will be broadcast live from The Theater at Madison Square Garden in NY on Saturday, Nov. 18 with "performances, sketches and short films".

The announcement came two months after HBO and Mr. Stewart abandoned a highly anticipated animation project that Mr. Stewart had worked on for the network for 18 months.
