HBO Sets Chernobyl Miniseries Starring Jared Harris from 'Breaking Bad' Director

Chernobyl looks at the 1986 accident at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant and stars The Crown's Jared Harris as Soviet scientist Valery Legasov. Chernobyl reveals how and why the disaster happened, telling the stories of the heroes who fought and fell.

Chernobyl will begin filming in Lithuania in Spring 2018. Johan Renck, who has directed episodes of "Breaking Bad", "The Walking Dead", and "Halt and Catch Fire" in addition to the pilot of "Bloodline".

"From the moment Craig Mazin pitched us the story, we were convinced that this all-too-true tale of horror and redemption needed to be told", said Kary Antholis, president of HBO Miniseries and Cinemax Programming.

The five-part series comes from writer Craig Mazin ("The Hangover II & III") and will be produced by "Game of Thrones" vet Carolyn Strauss and Jane Featherstone ("Broadchurch"). It is the first Sky/HBO project to be greenlit through an global partnership to develop big-scale drama, under a $250 million co-production investment.

This April it was announced that Sky and HBO would be pairing to develop and commission "high-end productions that feature engaging stories with worldwide points of view and casting".

Gary Davey, the managing director of content at Sky, said: "In Chernobyl, Craig Mazin has achieved something unique-his script is second to none, effortlessly combining the visceral, the tragic and the heroic perspectives behind this devastating event".

"The scale of the production makes it a ideal first project for our co-production partnership with HBO, encapsulating our ambition to develop high-end drama with global viewpoints and casting", said Gary Davey, Sky's managing director of content.
