Find alternatives to cut pollution or charge diesels, councils told

"Today we're confirming as part of our plan to deal with air pollution that we will go ahead with getting rid of these polluting cars".

Demand for diesel cars fell 10 per cent in the first half of the year in Britain, whilst sales of petrol vehicles rose five per cent, according to industry data. Reprogramming traffic lights, removing or redesigning speed bumps (!) and roundabouts, and retrofitting buses are all being mooted as possible ways of reducing air pollution. It says "Local authorities should bear in mind such access restrictions would only be necessary for a limited period and should be lifted once legal compliance is achieved and there is no risk of legal limits being breached again".

Auto dealers' hopes of a scrappage scheme to help usher motorists into newer, cleaner cars in the meantime do not look likely to emerge initially, however.

Because of the high cost of batteries, electric and even hybrid vehicles generally cost considerably more than cars that run on gasoline alone.

That 2030 deadline also involves seeing 800,000 electric vehicles on our roads, according to their National Framework on Alternative Fuels Infrastructure.

"The diesel sector is more riddled with misunderstanding than electrification", he said.

"The industry instead wants a positive approach which gives consumers incentives to purchase these cars", the society's chief executive, Mike Hawes, told the BBC.

Several vehicle makers have welcomed today's news, with Hyundai stating that the combustion engine ban aligns with its current plans.

Bridges added that electric vehicles were the future and a move from petrol and diesel to low-emission transport was "a natural evolution". United Kingdom vehicle registrations a year ago for gasoline- and diesel-powered cars ran at around 1.3 million for each fuel type.

Stephanie Brinley, senior autos analyst at IHS Markit, said getting rid of gas-guzzling cars would be hard. That is more than all other brands offering Fuel Cell combined.

A target of 50,000 electric vehicles on our roads by 2020 was previously set in 2014, but in reality uptake has been much lower with indications showing that the figure will be only 8,000.

This taskforce is expected to make recommendations on the role of motor taxation and fuel excise while the Tax Strategy Group will also publish a paper on Environmental and Energy Taxes later this summer. The company has announced that they'll be producing an electric Mini for the United Kingdom market. We are a relatively small part of a larger problem. "Will we be able to actually support all this new technology which is as yet not proven?"

Electric cars have been on sale in the United Kingdom since the turn of the decade, and many manufacturers are now launching their second generation versions of the cars, which are both cheaper to buy and run and which have larger batteries to allow for more range in between charges. They have to look at the long-term effects of methane "and the science is more complicated and it is not final".
