Dominant Jacob deGrom leads Mets past Padres

That's home run No. 18 for Renfroe this year, and it's one that he - and everyone else in attendance - will remember for a long, long time.

DeGrom said that he was not sure how he tweaked his ankle, saying he does not drag his foot enough on the mound to hurt it.

"I've been able to throw my fastball to both sides of the plate and work off that", deGrom said of what's aided him during his winning streak. I think that's what helped me with success in 2015, being able to locate my fastball and pitch off that.

As rotation has seen starters come and go all year, deGrom has taken the ball every five days and provided the team consistent and mostly fantastic innings.

"I tried to stay out there as long as I can".

Closer Addison Reed had a shaky bottom of the ninth inning, but ultimately, NY won the game and moved deGrom to 12-3 on the season. It doesn't look like it was foul by much.

In a third straight superb performance, the right-hander was dominant for eight innings and carried the Mets to their fifth victory in six games, 5-3 over the Padres at Petco Park.

The Mets strung together runs in the third and eighth innings, and Wilmer Flores led off the second with his 10th home run. Jay Bruce leads the Mets with 96 hits and 67 RBI while Michael Conforto and Jose Reyes have combined for 155 hits and 88 RBI.

DeGrom's only big mistake was allowing Renfroe's moonshot home run onto the top of the Western Metal Supply Co. When Renfroe was called up last September, he hit the first ball to reach that level. The 29-year-old Floridian settled in after a shaky first inning on Wednesday and held St. Louis to one run and seven hits while throwing 110 pitches over 6 2/3 frames. Eighty percent of that rotation now sits on the disabled list - Wheeler was placed there Monday with a stress injury to his right humorous - leaving deGrom to carry the torch alone.

DeGrom struck out his first four batters before walking Cory Spangenberg and allowing a single to Manuel Margot.

NOTES: The Padres traded RHP Brandon Maurer, RHP Trevor Cahill and LHP Ryan Buchter to the Kansas City Royals for RHP Matt Strahm, LHP Travis Wood and a minor league infielder.

Flores homered to center leading off the second, his 10th.

"He's as good as anyone in the league when he is on, and he was on", Padres manager Andy Green said.

Mets: RHP Seth Lugo (4-2, 4.05) is scheduled to start the second game of the four-game series Tuesday night. In his last eight starts, he has pitched to a 1.61 ERA, struck out 58 and walked 12.
