'Suspicious vehicle' slams into Capitol Police cruiser

A vehicle veered off the road and into the barrier near the Library of Congress at Capitol Hill. The crash occurred at approximately 11:45 a.m.

Independence Avenue SE is closed between Washington Avenue and Third Street.

Fox News reports that it's unclear whether the two vehicles involved in the incident were connected. The incident was still ongoing shortly after 2 p.m.

A statement from US Capitol Police said: "The U.S. Capitol Police are continuing to investigate a suspicious vehicle located at Second Street and Independence Avenue SE".

Capitol Police said there was no evidence to indicate any nexus to terrorism. The officer has since been released from the hospital, according to police. Police cleared media and tourists out of the area, which was a section of Independence Avenue south of the Library of Congress building.

The driver of the crashed vehicle sustained injuries and was taken to the hospital.

One auto nearly struck the police vehicle, according to reports, while another auto did crash into the cruiser.
