As per police reports, the Sri Lankan navy arrested the fishermen when they had accidently entered the territorial waters of Sri Lanka.

According to the Sri Lankan navy website, a fast attack craft attached to northern naval command arrested the four Indian fishermen while they were engaged in illegal fishing activities in Sri Lankan territorial waters about nine nautical miles North West off Kovilan coast on Sunday.

The fishermen along with fishing dhow and fishing gear were handed over to the Assistant Fisheries Director, Jaffna for onward legal action.

Three more fishermen along with a fishing trawler of Pudukottai district were detained on July 8. Earlier on July 13, seven fishermen belonging to Pudukkottai district were arrested with two boats.

Post the arrest, fishermen were shifted to Kangesanthurai by the Lankan naval men along with their boat.

This is the fourth instance of arrest of Tamil Nadu fishermen by the Lankan Navy this month.
