While many would've thought that Arc System Works' new announcement would be the icing on the cake at this year's tournament, Wavedash Games have broken through with the reveal of their new game Icons: Combat Arena. The trailer reveals the EVO Japan game line-up, which includes Bandai Namco's Tekken 7, Guilty Gear Xrd Rev 2, King of Fighters XIV, Blazblue: Central Fiction, Super Smash Bros. for the Wii U, Street Fighter V, and Nintendo's very own ARMS. Brawl conversion Project M, which aimed to make the game more like its predecessor Melee and appeal to the competitive crowd. The game won't feature any Nintendo branding or characters whatsoever. If you don't want to wait an entire year until the next installment of the world's premiere fighting game tournament, then I've got good news.

The initial public reaction to the game appears to be somewhat negative; the trailer now has more dislikes than likes, and the highest-rated comments are complaints about the game's movesets and art style.

As of now, reception for Icons: Combat Arena is mixed to say the least. Many players have lamented the fact that Project M ceased production a while back, and seeing one of the factors in that decision here in the trailer wasn't too reassuring for fans of the mod. With any luck, Wavedash Games will be able to tweak the title to the fans' liking following the upcoming beta.

However, if you're intrigued by what you see, you might like to know that Icons: Combat Arena is due to enter beta on PC this autumn, with a full release due sometime next year.
