HTC users complain in-built keyboard app is showing ads

In case you didn't know, TouchPal is the name of the company that provides the keyboard app pre-installed on many HTC phones, as well as others from Huawei, ZTE, Lenovo, Sony or Alcatel. This has infuriated a number of users and they have taken to social media to outrage against this. Ads will be removed "as quickly as possible", while in the meantime, folks on Twitter are being told to locate the TouchPal app in the Settings menu and uninstall its updates. This is something that no one expected from a multinational giant which has such a reputation in the markets.

For what it's worth, it was never the OEM's intention to pester you with advertising while typing and drastically reducing your precious screen real estate. Search Engines, Video Streams and various other places are nearly expected to show ads now. HTC has just pushed out an update to the Touchpal keyboard that it uses by default on some of its smartphones, like last year's HTC 10, that puts very visible and obnoxious ads at the very top of the keyboard, which means you get to see them all the time. But, smartphone users don't expect default apps on their smartphones to display ads as they have paid for it along with the hardware. Uninstalling these updates would result in the app getting back to the way it used to be.

HTC has come under fire with ads started appearing in the stock keyboard app on one of its flagship devices.

Going by HTC's statement, it looks like the ads on the HTC 10 keyboard app are not of HTC's doing.

While Microsoft has always been criticised for advertising its own services, such as OneDrive, on Windows 10, HTC smartphone owners are complaining that they are seeing ads for third-party services (below), possibly pulled from Google's AdSense service, whenever they are typing something. They are probably present because they're controlled by TouchPal. More worrying, however, is the thought that such an invasive change slipped past HTC or that it allowed it to go through, despite being "not the experience we intended".
