Flights out of Gatwick Airport were briefly put on hold on Monday morning after an Air Canada plane burst a tire on take-off.

"Following this Gatwick's runway has been closed since 2.12pm to allow for a runway inspection".

Airline passengers are facing cancellations, delays and disruption after a plane tyre burst as it left the runway on a transatlantic flight.

"We apologise as flights for the rest of the day will experience delay and there will be some cancellations", the statement said.

All inbound and outbound flights have since been halted for more than an hour with inspectons still taking place on the runway.

An airline spokesman said: "Air Canada Rouge flight 1925 Gatwick-Toronto, a Boeing 767 with 282 passengers on board, landed safely back at Gatwick".

The runway has been closed since just after 2pm.

"The current runway closure follows an earlier closure between 1.16pm and 1.45pm when the runway was closed for an inspection after this aircraft departed".
