Kendrick Perkins, a Thunder teammate of Westbrook and Durant from 2011 to '15, said in May that he brokered a phone call between the pair that took place in April after Westbrook eclipsed Oscar Robertson's triple-double record.

Westbrook finished with 69-of-101 first place votes and 888 points, while Harden finished with 22 first place votes, 69 second place votes and 753 points, appearing on every ballot.

Green received 99 of a possible 100 first-team votes from a panel of media voters. He had a franchise-record 10 steals in a February 10 game at Memphis while recording the first triple-double in National Basketball Association history without scoring in double figures, adding 11 rebounds and 10 assists.

The year's MVP race has been reported as the closest and most exciting since the famous 1989-90 season, where superstars such as Michael Jordan, Magic Johnson, Hakeem Olajuwon, Patrick Ewing and Charles Barkley were in the running to win the award.

Westbrook also broke Robertson's record for most triple-doubles in a single season with 42, as the Thunder had a record of 33-9 when he had a triple-double and 14-26 when he did not have one.

The trophy explains - in a song collaboration between Jordan Brand and rapper Phonte - that Westbrook's triple-double streak, his net rating and his clutch stats were all numbers that catapulted him past the likes of other MVP finalists James Harden and Kawhi Leonard.

"These are my brothers, these guys sacrificed so much for me throughout the year", Westbrook said.

The Most Improved Player was Brogdon's teammate Giannis Anteokounmpo.

"This is not an individual award".

D'Antoni, who also won the award while coaching Phoenix, followed Rockets guard Eric Gordon's win for Sixth Man of the Year.

Draymond Green of the Golden State Warriors was named NBA Defensive Player of the Year.

Golden State's Bob Myers was named Executive of the Year. Hall of Famer Bill Russell was given the NBA's first lifetime achievement award, which was presented to him by five fellow Hall of Fame centers: Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, David Robinson, Alonzo Mouring, Dikembe Mutombo and Shaquille O'Neal. "You guys sacrificed everything you done in your whole life". The award was presented to San Antonio Spurs executive Monty Williams, for the way he has persevered through the grief of his wife, Ingrid, dying in a vehicle crash a year ago. He was given a colorful jacket like the ones worn by Craig Sager, the longtime Turner Sports reporter who died of cancer this past season.
