Facebook Now Has 2 Billion Users, Mark Zuckerberg Reveals

CEO Mark Zuckerberg is no longer satisfied with helping people share baby pictures and live video - or fake news and hate symbols - via the social network he created.

"We're making progress connecting the world, and now let's bring the world closer together", he wrote.

Mark Zuckerberg wants Facebook groups to play an important role that community groups like churches and Little League teams used to perform: Bringing communities together.

Facebook is trying to set the stage for a return to China where it's been blocked since 2009. So, yeah: almost two-thirds of the people on the Internet are on Facebook.

Facebook is of course touting the good news and the human interconnection angle of this milestone, because that makes the overall implications seem warm and cuddly. The second billion is somewhat harder. And what Facebook aims to maximize is the time people spend in its online groups.

"We realize that we need to do more too", the 33-year-old said in a recent interview with CNN Tech.

"We started a project to see if we could get better at suggesting groups that will be meaningful to you".
