CHICAGO — The New Jersey Devils grabbed Nico Hischier, and the Philadelphia Flyers felt quite comfortable with Nolan Patrick.

On Saturday, it was all about drafting. The 18-year-old Canadian center had 32 goals and 62 assists in 69 games last season for the Portland Winterhawks of the Western Hockey League.

The 5-foot-11, 182-pound center was selected by the Chicago Blackhawks in the third round. Jokiharju becomes the 12th Winterhawks player selected by the Blackhawks in Winterhawks history, the most of any National Hockey League franchise. Whether it's turning being cut from Team Canada for the Ivan Hlinka tournament into making Team Canada for the U18s, or turning being an honorable mention from NHL Central Scouting into raising himself into the top 10, his drive and motivation to improve are considered some of his greatest strengths.

Jokiharju, 18, paced all WHL rookie defensemen with 48 points (9G, 39A) and four power-play goals in 71 regular-season games this past season.

Skyler McKenzie was also in his second season of draft eligibility, and was snapped up by the Winnipeg Jets at 198th overall in the seventh round.

Patrick scored 92 goals and 205 points in 163 career games with Brandon.

The 18-year-old Altybarmakyan is from St. Petersburg, Russia.
