Fendi had a lifelong commitment to her native city's culture and heritage and the foundation she set up with her husband Candido funded the restoration of Rome's famous Trevi Fountain. So, for more about the fashion mogul, take a look at our Carla Fendi wiki.

In 1925, Carla Fendi's parents, Adele and Edoardo, founded a small family firm dedicated to fur and leather goods.

She joined the firm in the 1950s, and along with her sisters, in 1965 she hired young German designer Karl Lagerfeld, who launched the House's first ready-to-wear collection in 1977 and who marked his 50th anniversary with the brand previous year. The brand also helped revolutionise leather handbags in the 1990s, making them softer and less rigid, while Fendi's niece, Silvia Venturini Fendi, invented the famed Fendi baguette bag inspired in shape by the traditional French loaf. Despite the fact that the label cut back on its use of furs due to animal rights activists, Fendi continued to remain a thriving brand in the world of fashion.

Carla's family announced on Tuesday that she had passed away on Monday in Rome.

Lagerfeld remains the brand's womenswear designer, along with his other fashion pursuits at Chanel and his own brand, while Silvia Venturini Fendi, daughter of Anna, is the brand's creative director.

"For her nothing was impossible", Venturini Fendi told RAI state television.

In her later years, Fendi became a well-known patron of the arts and Italian craftsmanship.

Besides her contributions to fashion, Carla Fendi will be remembered for her support of Italian culture, including the Spoleto Festival in Umbria.

On Instagram, Ms Simone Marchetti, fashion editor of Italian newspaper La Repubblica, wrote "how important it is to leave a trace not just on fashion and on business, but most of all on art, beauty and theatre". "We will feel the loss of a cultured an sensitive woman", said Italy's Culture Minister Dario Francheschini.
