Animal Shelters Filling Up With Pets In Harvey's Wake

Goldsmith said they will likely take a team of six people in two cargo vans plus an RV so they can bring back as many animals as possible. In response to these numbers, less than a year after Katrina the Pet Evacuation Transportation Standards (PETS) Act of 2006 was put into place.

Rescue the Animals is sending one of their volunteers to Corpus Christi Aug. 29.

Animals lost and abandoned in the flooding will be taken to the Acadiana Animal Aid shelter in Lafayette, while the cats and dogs that were at the Louisiana shelter will now be available for adoption in San Diego.

The people at Austin Pets Alive have been directly working with shelters in the line of Harvey to swiftly move pets to safety at the APA location.

The Cleveland Animal Protective League has been coordinating efforts with animal agencies in Texas for ways to help them make room in their shelters.

If you want to help, there are plenty of local shelters, like Austin Pets Alive, where you can donate money. This law forces state and local governments to consider pets as part of their emergency evacuations, and also enables workers to "procure, construct, or renovate emergency shelter facilities and materials that will temporarily accommodate people with pets and service animals".

People interested in fostering an animal can fill out an online application.

In San Antonio, the city has taken the lead in handling the needs of adoption centers and evacuees from Alvin, Houston and other flooded areas. Owners are given a contact number to keep tabs on their pets, and veterinarians are on hand to offer vaccinations and other medical care.
