Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger conceded his team had been punished for a "disastrous" performance after they were thrashed 4-0 by fellow Premier League title hopefuls Liverpool on Sunday.

Wenger told Sky Sports: "Of course it was shocking".

The darling of the home crowd, Sadio Mane, added a second five minutes before the break before Egyptian Mohamed Salah stole the ball from a hesitant Hector Bellerin 12 minutes into the second half before scoring the third.

Wenger did not attempt to gloss over a ramshackle display devoid of any positives, admitting "everything" had gone wrong.

"I think from the first minute to the last minute we were not at the level requested for such a game".

Arsene Wenger tore into his Arsenal players after an "absolutely disastrous" performance resulted in a 4-0 thrashing at Liverpool.

Jay Rodriguez s diving header put West Brom in front just beyond the hour, but Stoke levelled 13 minutes from time when a miscued clearance by Ahmed Hegazi enabled substitute Peter Crouch to head into an empty net.

"We played an outstanding game against Hoffenheim and today we did the next step. The performance was flawless and the result is the result of the performance", he added.

Ozil, who endured a torrid afternoon, wrote on Instagram: "We were simply not good enough. Not to become too emotional, we have to take some distance, and there are some reasons behind it, and the players now go on their global break, but we do have to take the consequences of our performance today", added the Frenchman.

"It wasn't my finest goal, we will take them every day of the week", Crouch, who came off the bench to score, said. If I am the problem I am the problem - I am sorry because I am the problem but I believe all together we lose.

"I don't want to answer that".

Former Arsenal full back Lee Dixon, now working for USA television network NBC, said it was the worst performance from the club he had witnessed since retiring in 2002.

- Arsenal have lost nine of their last 14 Premier League away matches (W4 D1 L9) - their previous nine away defeats in the competition came over a period of 47 games (W25 D13 L9). "We have got talent, but you have to have the hard work and heart to match that, like we did today". This is the most disappointing thing.
