Murray had arrived exhausted in NY past year following his triumphs at Wimbledon and the Olympics This time around, he has not hit a ball in anger since making his last-eight exit from the All England Club, pained by an ongoing hip condition.

The 2012 US Open champion practised all week but claimed it was too sore for him to win the tournament.

Murray said there was no reason he could not get himself back to the form he showed in 2016, when he won Wimbledon and took the No 1 spot for the first time.

"I spoke to a number of specialists about it to get the best advice possible". Anyone that already filled out their brackets for their office pools or online competitions will have to go back and make fresh picks with the new-look draw. "But I'll decide on that in the next couple of days, for sure".

Murray has been absent since his quarter-final exit to Sam Querrey at SW19, during which he clearly struggled with the hip problem, and lost his place at the top of the ATP rankings as a result.

Awarded a wildcard for what will be her first Grand Slam since last year's Australian Open, the Russian was paired against second seed Simona Halep.

Novak Djokovic, Stan Wawrinka, Milos Raonic and Kei Nishikori are the other absentees from the US Open.

"I'll definitely make a decision on the rest of the year in the next few days", added Murray.

"I have been practising here and been competitive in practice when I'm not moving close to how I can when I'm healthy".

He has dealt with hip problems off and on for years, but not to the point where it forced him off the tour for an extended absence. If it means that I can play before the end of the year, then that's what I would love to do.

The 22-year-old, who arrived in NY on Saturday after reaching the semi-finals of the Winston-Salem Open, said: "It's just unfortunate Andy's not playing but it doesn't change how I approach it".

The Scot, who had not played since Wimbledon, said he had tried everything to be fit for the final grand slam of the year, which starts on Monday.
