Those in the know suggest that the group's new effort, Science Fiction, could earn perhaps 55,000 equivalent album units in the week ending August 24.

The long-awaited fifth studio effort from the emo cult heroes - their first in eight years - is looking to take the top spot on the chart with estimated sales of 55,000 units by the end of the week.

If the prediction holds true, Science Fiction will give Brand New their first-ever number-one album.

The album, their first in eight years, was released on August 18, initially as a digital download and eventually released on streaming platforms.

Brand New made its Billboard 200 debut in 2003 with Deja Entendu, which arrived on the list dated July 5 of that year, debuting and peaking at No. 63.

Not only would it be the band's first No. 1 album-but it would be the first independently distributed album to hit No. 1 this year, too. If it does rank No. 1, it will also be the third rock album to lead the Billboard rock chart in 2017-joining Arcade Fire's Everything Now and Linkin Park's One More Light.

The band's previous album, Daisy, debuted at No. 6 on the Billboard charts.
