Afridi's previous best in the short format was 80 but he went 21 better than that on Tuesday as he helped guide Hampshire Royals to the T20 Blast semi-finals at Derbyshire Falcons' expense. Derbyshire had prepared a green seaming track for their seamers but under Afridi's assault they lost their length and pitched far too full - and, strangely, their only seamer of much worldwide experience, Matt Henry of New Zealand, did not bowl a single over in the six-over Powerplay, and did not bowl his second over until the 13th of the innings, when he had Afridi caught at long-leg off a top-edged hook.

Afridi's 101 included seven sixes and 10 fours and was his first T20 hundred in 256 T20 matches.

Hampshire promoted Afridi to opener against the county he played for in 2003 and he swept and drove four boundaries from Wayne Madsen's first over before Calvin Dickinson took two fours from Hardus Viljoen.

Afridi's previous high score in the competition this season was 18 but he pulled Ben Cotton for six before driving him over the top of the three-storey media centre.
