Elton John has declared it was an "honour" to have worked with Bruce Forsyth following the veteran entertainer's death on Friday.

Forsyth, one of Britain's best-known gameshow hosts, fronted television programmes including "The Generation Game" and "Play Your Cards Right".

A statement from his manager Ian Wilson said he died "peacefully at his home surrounded by his wife Wilnelia and all his children", the BBC reported.

"A couple of weeks ago, a friend visited him and asked him what he had been doing these last eighteen months".

"With a twinkle in his eye, he responded 'I've been very, very busy. being ill!' Unfortunately, not long after this, his health deteriorated and he contracted bronchial pneumonia".

A show source is quoted as telling the Daily Star: "We couldn't let the opening episode of the new "Strictly" pass without paying a big tribute to the great man".

British Prime Minister Theresa May said the United Kingdom had lost a national treasure.

Host Claudia Winkleman, who took over from Bruce in 2014, and co-presenter Tess both tweeted heartfelt tributes to the "King of TV, the prince of performers".

"He had a remarkable chemistry with his audience - that's what made him such an fantastic professional and why he was so loved."It was reported that Forsyth, who was knighted by Queen Elizabeth in 2011, had been unwell for some time and had undergone keyhole surgery in 2015 after suffering two aneurysms". With his third wife, Wilnelia, he had a son.
