Ford announces scrappage scheme

It follows hot on the heels of BMW and Mercedes-Benz's similar schemes, offering discounts on a selection of new models by trading in your old banger.

All of the part-exchanged vehicles will be scrapped, Ford said, which would have an "immediate positive effect on air quality".

The announcement was welomed by Transport Secretary Chris Graylng, who said auto manufacturers "clearly also have a role to play in cleaning up our air" and urged others to consider following suit.

Ford is the latest auto company to launch an incentive for United Kingdom consumers to trade-in cars over seven years old, by offering £2,000 off a new model. It is the latest in a series of such schemes run by leading auto companies amid mounting concerns about air quality and the Volkswagen emissions scandal. Customers will receive a scrappage incentive of £2,000, with up to £7,000 in total savings when used in conjunction with vehicle offers. The forthcoming Autumn Budget is also likely to see tax rates raised for new diesel cars.

"We don't believe incentivising sales of new cars goes far enough", said Andy Barratt, chairman and MD of Ford of Britain.

Edmund King, president of the AA, said: "These initiatives are obviously there to boost sales of new cars, but if they are going to take polluting diesel cars off the road, then that has to be a good thing".

Ford said its EcoBoost petrol and EcoBlue diesel vehicles, which meet the current Euro 6 standard for vehicle emissions, are its cleanest and most fuel efficient to date, and therefore produce lower emissions than previous generations of vehicles.

While other manufacturers, including Vauxhall and BMW, have launched scrappage schemes this year, Ford's is unusual in allowing customers to trade in and scrap any brand of older vehicle for at least £2,000. The scheme is applicable to any pre-Euro 5 vehicle, registered by December 31 2009. Instead it said new diesel and petrol cars would be banned from 2040. The incentive will run until the end of 2017, and is valid for registrations between September 1 and December 31.

Can I get any other discounts?
