He was suffering from cancer and the doctors informed that his kidneys were also damaged.

According to reports, when the condition of Mandal got worsened in jail, he was taken to the Medical College Hospital on Sunday evening but died during his treatment.

Mahesh Mandal was working as a clerk at the government's welfare department before he was arrested in the scam.

After the death of Mandal, his family created a ruckus in the hospital. Reiterating his allegations that CM Nitish Kumar was aware of the Srijan funds scam, Lalu accused him of suppressing the facts to protect those involved in the embezzlement of government money to the tune of over Rs1,000 crore.

Mandal, who was a Bhagalpur District Welfare Department Accountant (nazir), was arrested on August 13 and sent to jail two days later allegedly for being a conduit in the multi-crore Srijan scam in which an NGO had siphoned off government funds worth crores of rupees with the connivance of State government staff members and bank officials. Mandal had earlier been provided dialysis in a prominent hospital in Mumbai, reported the Hindu.

Mandal's family has, however, alleged that he was not provided adequate treatment during his stay in the jail.

Preliminary investigation had found that money meant to acquire land under the Mukhya Mantri Nagar Vikas Yojna was transferred under different names to the accounts of Bhagalpur-based cooperative society Srijan Mahila Vikas Sahyog Samiti Limited.

The NGO apparently was providing vocational training to women and selling pickles.

It is alleged that Mandal was a close associate of Devi.

Lalu, whose party ran the Bihar government in coalition with Nitish till the recent collapse of the Mahagathbandhan, made it a point to highlight on micro-blogging website Twitter that Mandal was the father of a "very rich JD (U) leader".

The founder of the Srijan NGO, Manorama Devi passed away past year after which the operations of the NGO were hit.

"Both of them should resign as Srijan scam happened in their knowledge and they protected the main accused", Yadav said.
