Zidane puts Real on a pedestal

The Wales global failed to find any sort of momentum in a memorable 2016-17 for Los Blancos, missing almost half the campaign through injury.

Zidane's side are heavy favourites to retain the Spanish championship for the first time in a decade, especially after this week's 5-1 Spanish Super Cup victory over Barcelona.

However, following just 8 La Liga starts during his debut campaign at the club, the 23-year-old went on to solidify himself as an important member of Zinedine Zidane's squad last season, starting 19 league outings for the eventual Spanish champions. "He suffered from four months of injury a year ago but has had good preparation for this season".

"We are in a very good moment and must take advantage of it", he said.

Cristiano Ronaldo will miss the trip to Riazor on Sunday due to suspension as Real Madrid open their La Liga campaign against Deportivo La Coruna. We appealed it and we'll appeal again and that's that.

The 36-time capped global is now considered absolutely "not for sale", with Blancos boss Zidane expecting Kovacic to play a key role for the club for many years to come. We can always improve - that is the objective for us. "He's doing it better and better, he's phenomenal", Zidane said.

"He's fine. He's training consistently and that's crucial for him", said the coach. "He's physically fit, he's not suffering any discomfort and I hope it's going to be a big year both for him and for the team".

Deportivo are hopeful of tying up a deal for Arsenal striker Lucas Perez, who appears surplus to requirements at the Emirates.

He told Marca: "I have not known the president for a long time but, apart from knowing how much he loves Depor, I know that he's really headstrong".
