USA and Chinese defense officials are pulling no punches as they discuss issues of concern to both countries, including the problem posed by a nuclear-armed North Korea, the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff said here today.

On Wednesday, the chairman of the U.S. Joint Chiefs of Staff, Marine Corps Gen. Joseph Dunford, continued a visit to China following talks the day before with his Chinese counterpart that touched on North Korea. "There's no military solution (to North Korea's nuclear threats), forget it", Bannon said in the interview. Bannon was quoted as saying there's no military solution to the threat posed by North Korea and its nuclear ambitions, despite the president's recent pledge to answer further aggression with "fire and fury". He is the highest-ranking USA military official to visit the country since President Donald Trump took office.

Tensions have flared between the USA and North Korea after Pyongyang made advances in its missile testing.

Dunford said China and the United States already have the capability for secure video teleconferences between Dunford and Fang Fenghui, chief of the joint staff department of the People's Liberation Army.

The United States has expressed concern about what it calls unsafe intercepts of US aircraft by the Chinese air force and a lack of transparency in military spending by China, which is in the midst of an ambitious military modernization program.

Dunford did emphasize the administration was seeking a peaceful solution, but said allowing the North to develop nuclear attack capability against the US was "unimaginable". -South Korean military exercises that enrage the North each year could make diplomacy even more hard.

In Moscow, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said world powers have "nearly exhausted" the economic pressures they can put on North Korea.

The missile plans were previously announced. "I can confidently say there will not be a war again on the Korean Peninsula".

When it comes to the South China Sea, China and the USA strongly disagree on territorial claims in the sea's worldwide waterways. The U.S. continues to conduct freedom of navigation operations in the area to dispute China's claims.

He added improved military contacts would reduce the chances of "miscalculation".

"This is the same as China's solution to the North Korea nuclear issue", Hua said.

The Chinese general told his US counterpart, who was on a visit to China, that "wrong actions on the Taiwan issue, the United States deploying the THAAD system around China, US ships and aircraft activities in the South China Sea, the United States close-in surveillance in the sea and air near China have had a large, negative influence on bilateral military ties and mutual trust". The liquid-fuel missile is created to be fired from road mobile launchers and has been described by North Korea as built for attacking Alaska and Hawaii.
