Bengaluru FC (BFC) has signed ace India global goalkeeper Gurpreet Singh Sandhu for the 2017-18 campaign, the club announced here on Thursday.

While Mohammed Salim was the first Indian to turn out for a European club at Celtic in 1936, Gurpreet's time at Stabaek saw him earn the record of being the first Indian player to play in a top division league in Europe.

Gurpreet took to Twitter to announce his arrival in Bengaluru and called himself a "Blue".

"I'm extremely delighted to have signed for Bengaluru FC".

First-team appearances for Gurpreet, however, were few and far between through his three years in Norway, forcing a decision to move to India, where he has turned out for I-League club East Bengal in the past. "With BFC playing on the continental level this season as well as the next one, it will provide the flawless platform for me", he added.

Gurpreet will be representing Bengaluru FC in the upcoming season of the Indian Super League but before that he will stand tall at Bengaluru FC's goal in their AFC Cup tie against North Korea's April 25 Sports Club on August 23.

With Gurpreet in goal, the Indian national team hasn't conceded a goal in the last 298 minutes of play, including 1-0 wins over Myanmar and Kyrgyzstan that have placed them on top of Group A in the AFC Asian Cup qualifying campaign, where the top two teams in the group will qualify for the 24-team competition in UAE.

India are now at the top of Group A in the AFC Asian Cup qualifying from where two teams will qualify for the main event.
