The Supreme Court had last month refused to allow the rape victim to undergo an abortion due to grave risk to her life.

According to doctors, the newborn is underweight, at 2.02 kg, but her condition is stable.

The rape victim was admitted to the Government Medical College and Hospital in Sector 32 for the past two days as a team of doctors monitored her health.

A 12 year old girl was kidnapped and raped in Chandigarh on Tuesday while she was on her way to school to celebrate Indian Independence Day.

A bench comprising Chief Justice J S Khehar and Justice D Y Chandrachud took note of the report of the medical board set up by Post-Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research, Chandigarh to examine the rape survivor and the consequences if the termination of pregnancy was allowed.

Her parents had approached the Chandigarh district court for permission to terminate the pregnancy. The victim was allegedly raped on knife point after which the accused fled the spot. The incident was reported when the girl was taken to a hospital by her mother after she complained of severe stomach ache on July 15.
