A class eight girl has been raped while she was returning home from school after Independence Day celebrations in Chandigarh.

The incident happened at the children's traffic park, located in Sector 23, considered as the heart of the city, on Tuesday morning.

The victim was taken to the Government Multi-Specialty Hospital in Sector 16 for a medical examination, police sources said.

"The girl was on her way to school and had used the park route as a short cut to make it to the school function well in time", a police official said.

Chandigarh's Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Eish Singhal and other police officers who were attending the main Independence Day functions at the Parade Ground in Sector 17 rushed to the spot.

The girl who is a government school student was crossing the children's traffic park in Sector 23 which is manned by the Chandigarh Police when a man, aged around 40, allegedly caught hold of her and dragged her into a nullah in the park and raped her at knife point. "An FIR has been registered under section 363, 376 of the Indian Penal Code, besides relevant sections of Protection Of Children from Sexual offences (POCSO) Act", he said.

Just as India celebrated the Independence Day, a 12-year old girl was raped in Chandigarh. "We have registered an FIR, suspect has been rounded up and investigation is underway. The girl is stable, though she has been traumatised by the incident", said Mr. Singhal. "Further probe is under progress", Singhal said.

The rape comes after the Varnika Kundu stalking case rocked the nation in which Varnika, an IAS officer's daughter was stalked by Haryana BJP's chief's son Vikas Barala.
