The Evening Standard has revealed that the Premier League champions have ramped up their interest in the 25-year-old after initially eyeing the star back in April.

The West London have been linked with a host full-backs this summer window, including the likes of Juventus' Alex Sandro, Porto's Alex Telles and Paris Saint-Germain's Serge Aurier.

Despite returning to training later than much of the Saints squad due to his involvement in the Confederations Cup, the Portugal global started Southampton's goalless draw with Swansea City on Saturday and the St Mary's following will desperately be hoping the defender is still at the club to take his place against West Ham United in their next match this weekend.

Soares has displayed a fantastic performance throughout his past two seasons with Southampton and has proven that he is incredibly suited to playing Premier League football.

Antonio Conte's Chelsea, as evidenced by their shock 3-2 loss at home to Burnley, are now looking paper-thin depth wise, with their Italian boss eyeing Cedric as a potential signing to rival first-choice Victor Moses at right-wing back for the Blues. Chelsea appear confident and nearly a little arrogant with their pursuit of the defender, but this could cost them the deal.

Southampton defender Virgil Van Dijk handed in a transfer request last week and Chelsea remain interested in the Dutchman. Southampton know that Chelsea have the funds and it wouldn't be surprising if the club ramp up their asking price for the Portuguese ace.
