Officers say they spoke with the victim, who is a 74-year-old retired police officer who said that he was walking on the sidewalk near the tennis courts at around 8:15 a.m. when a male walked up behind him, grabbed him by the shoulder and turned him around.

A teenager is facing charges after police said he tried to rob a 74-year-old man at a park in Naugatuck Tuesday morning.

Derrick Wilson attempted to rob the 74-year-old retired officer in Lindon Park around 8:15 a.m. on Tuesday. The man pointed a silver handgun at the victim and told him to "gimme your money", according to police.

The victim recognized the gun wasn't a real handgun and tried to knock it out of Wilson's hand with an umbrella after telling him he didn't have any money, police said. Wilson then fled the scene, according to police.

Naugatuck Police later identified and arrested Wilson after they were alerted of a suspicious male on North Main Street later that day.

Wilson is being charged with robbery in the first degree, possession of a facsimile weapon and breach of peace.
