Italian police said they had arrested the alleged kidnapper Lukasz Pawel Herba, a British resident born in Poland, and he had confessed to being involved in a plot.

He is the brother of chief suspect of Lukasz Pawel Herba, and was detained on a European Arrest Warrant in Tividale, West Midlands.

Ayling says she was lured to Milan last month for a fake photo shoot, then drugged, stuffed into a suitcase and held at a rural house by criminals who threatened to auction her online.

The arrest comes after Miss Ayling said she is going back into hiding after a whirlwind week in the spotlight - but says she will return with a book about her experience.

Ayling told police that when she arrived at the studio for the Milan photo shoot, she was drugged, gagged, bound, stuffed into a bag, put into the boot of a auto and driven to a village near Turin in northwest Italy.

The 20-year-old said she was injected with ketamine after being lured to a fake modelling shoot before being bundled into the boot of a auto and told she was going to be sold as a sex slave.

Lukasz Herba told police he freed her and handed her to the British consulate after the group became aware she had a young child, according to documents outlining his testimony. He said he was paid £500,000, found out the Romanians meant to kidnap her, and backed out of the plan. He is due to appear at Westminster Magistrates' Court on 17 August.
